What is Immunity?

The immune response or Immunity is the process of body recognizing and defends itself against bacteria, viruses, and other foreign substances which are harmful. Other names of Immune system, Innate immunity, Cellular Immunity, Humoral immunity, Inflammatory response; Acquired or adaptive immunity.

Types of Immunity

• The immune system protects our body from harmful substances by recognizing and responding to foreign substances or antigens which are kind living or non-living. Antigens like fungi, virus or bacteria, and Non-living substances such as toxins, drugs, chemicals, foreign particles which may destroy and fight against the diseases.
• There are other types of antigens called as HLA antigens where our immune system may not notice as foreign objects and will not respond.
• Other variety is Innate Immunity or also called as Nonspecific immunity is basic defensive mechanism since birth and protects against all antigens which are involuntary such as cough reflex, enzymes in tears, and skin gland oils, Mucus which traps bacteria and small micro particles, skin, stomach acid, and other chemical variety is interferon and interleukin-1 which may cause fever.
• Acquired Immunity is a variety of immune system for particular or specific antigens.
• Passive Immunity do occur in infants, and there are induced passive immunization such as injecting antiserum from other sources which are having immediate protection against particular antigen, and other examples are Immune serum globulin (hepatitis exposure) and tetanus antitoxin.
• Lymphatic System do have the similar action, such as lymphatic system which is very helpful. Lymphocytes are white a type of white blood cells and they are having their own defence mechanism.
• Inflammation is a process of immune response. When there is injury to tissues by bacteria, or any other toxins, the damaged cells will release chemicals including bradykinin, histamine, and prostaglandins or similar substances, these chemical will help to isolate foreign substances.
• The process is also called as Phagocytosis which is helpful method.
