Shilajatu is exudate of the mountain. Under the influence of scorching summer heat, a sticky resin like extract exudes from the hills and mountains, which solidifies within cracks and breaches to form shilajit. It needs to be essentially purified before internal use, as the ore comes laden with lot of impurities. Most commonly it is purified with triphala decoction. Shilajit is bitter and pungent in taste. Shjlajit or Shilajeet is a celestial exudation (resin) which trickles out from high Himalayan range, it naturally contains fine mixture of seven metals like gold, sliver, iron, etc. Shilajit (Asphaltum punjabinum) a master herb, is a mineral compound with loads of health benefits. Its qualities are glorified to the extent that it has been mentioned in the ancient scripts. It contains 85 types of different minerals. That is why it has been used in Ayurveda therapies from ages. Shiljait is very good to get rid of any kind of Weakness and improves sexual health to the best.

Dosage and administration of Shilajit

In summer season : Equal to one tiny seed, twice a day.

In Winter : Equal to 1-2 gms., twice a day.

In general : 1-2 drops, twice a day.

To be taken with hot milk. People who do not take milk they can take along with hot water also.

While taking Shilajeet, intake of cow's milk, water, clear soup of lentils, buttermilk, juices of fruits, and various herbs is advised. Pitta Prakriti people, while taking different preparations of shilajeet, should exercise caution. Adults should take it in metered doses and under the supervision of an expert Aurvedic physician, in lieu of avoiding any untoward side effects

Shilajit Precautions

Should not be used with a heavy diet. (Milk is an exception to the rule) Some physicians prohibit the use of kulattha(horsegram) while using shilajit. Non vegetarian food is not taken while taking shilajit. Kakamachi (Solanum nigrum, black nightshade) is contraindicated.

Do not use with high uric acid count. Although shilajit is used to treat kidney stones, use caution if the stones are made of uric acid or if uric acid crystals are in the urine as uric acid increases with the administration of shilajit. Hence, shilajit is contraindicated in gouty arthritis.

Shilajit may be utilized safely in clinical practice because shilajit is reported to be quite safe up to a dose of 3 g/kg in mice.
