What is Tympanitis

Tympanic membrane is a sensitive part of middle ear which is a part of sound conductive system and tympanic membrane is easily traumatized and susceptible to infections and the inflammation of tympanic membrane is called as Tympanitis or also called as Myringitis. In most of the cases it is associated with hearing impairment and even with earache, or congestion and may be sub-acute or may become as chronic. Cause for tympanitis

• Acute Otitis Media may also lead to Myringitis. When there is recurrent ear infections (middle ear infections), there may be chances of getting Tympanitis.
• Other causes are recurrent cold and cough, upper respiratory infections do cause tympanitis,
• When there is bacterial infections, viral infections, or fungal infections in middle ear, there may be chances of getting typmanitis or myringitis, even those infections may lead to Eczematous myringitis (due to dermal eczema).
• Other causes are perforation of the tympanic membrane and Bacillus fragilis and Peptostreptococcus species, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus mirabilis, and S aureus, bullous myringitis, Trichophyton rubrum, Mycobacterium tuberculosis etc.

Diagnosis of Tympanitis

By proper examination and Typical Otoscopic examination, proper diagnosis may be made and physician may notice hearing loss, discharge from ear, and children may experience pain upon traction of the pinna. When cultures are made from middle ear fluid, proper cause may be identified.

Treatment for Tympanitis

When proper diagnosis is made, doctor will suggest anti-inflammatory medications, Analgesics, antipruritics, and antihistamines and local treatments is also advised. Other surgeries like Myringoplasty are recommended and other supportive measures such as cartilaginous palisade, grafting etc. Analgesics are used as pain killers.

Complications of Tympanitis

There are many complications such as hearing loss or deafness which is temporary, or conductive or sensorineural, Tympanic membrane perforation, facial paralysis, vertigo or dizziness, other infections like abscess, sigmoid sinus thrombosis etc.

Ayurvedic medicines for tympanitis

When tympanitis is treated with medications or surgery, associated complications like deafness which may be temporary and when it is conductive type of deafness, one can consume some herbal medicines which are helpful to control infections, and to prevent deafness. The following medicines such as Divya Sarivadi Vati, Maha Manjishthadi Kashaya, Divya Tulsi Ghan Vati, Divya Singhnad Guggulu are the medicines which are helpful to control infections, pain, and to prevent deafness which is of conductive type and deafness due to any obstructions or blockages. There are some medicated oils which can be used externally over scalp such as ayurvedic medicines in the form of oils are Apamarga ksara taila, Ksara taila, Bhrangamalkadi taila Brihatmasa taila, Narayana taila, Maha narayana taila, Rasaraja rasa tailam etc are helpful.

Some natural foods are also helpful such as consuming onions, garlic, Apple, Ginko are good remedies.

There are ayurvedic treatments such as Nasyam, Shirodhara which are helpful. There is special treatment called Karnapurna treatment where medicated oil for filling in ear is good remedy.

Yoga and Pranayama for Deafness

• Some yoga poses which are found effective such as Sarvangasana, Karnapidasana, Yoga Mudra, Anuloma-Viloma Pranayama, Bhujangasana, are beneficial, other varieties of pranayama like Bramari, Bastrika pranayama are helpful.
• Naturopathy treatments are also helpful to prevent infections and inflammations.
• If an individual is having any habits like smoking or alcohol, or tobacco chewing, one should stop.
