What are Unani Medicines

The Unani System of Medicine is a part of traditional practice in India and is included in AYUSH, The Health department of India, which is introduced in India by Persians and Arabs. Though the Unani system was not encouraged during british rule in India, and it was survived well in Sharifi, Azizi, and Nizam families of Delhi, Lucknow, and Hyderabad respectively.

Unani Medicines Principles and Concepts

Similar to other systems like Ayurveda, or Siddha medicines, The Unani system is based upon four things  Blood, Phlegm, Yellow bile and Black bile, and they believe the human body is made up of seven components such as

Arkan, Mizaj, Akhlat, Aaza, Arwah, Quwa, Afaal, and Arkan which are compared as Elements, Temperament, Humors, Organs, Spirits, Faculties, Functions, and Elements respectively.

Unani system mentioned and compared elements and temperament of individual and its importance in treatment.

The Humorous or Akhlat in Unani system is mainly focusing digestion and metabolism, hepatic functioning, tissue metabolism. Similarly, Unani Medicines mentioned Organs, Spirits, Faculties or Aaza, Arwah, and Quwa respectively.

Diagnosis of diseases in Unani system

Similar to modern Medical sciences, Unani System of Medicine Implements the observation and physical examination, by considering vital factors, temperament, structure, and strength of faculties, and in simple language, the patient’s mind and body, diagnoses is made. Many traditional practitioners do follow pulse examination, urine, stool, inspection, palpitation, percussion, and occultation are also followed by Unani medicine system of diagnosing diseases.

Prevention of disease according to Unani System

The method of preventing diseases is highly focused hygiene, such as on food, air, and pollution. Apart from that, lifestyle such as bodily movement and response, psychological factors, sleep and wakefulness, and Evacuation and retention which is related with excretory system. Based on these measures, one can live healthy.

Therapies

There are four kinds of Therapeutics followed by Unani system, they are Regimental therapy (Ilaj-bil-Tadbir), Diet therapy (Ilaj-bil-Ghiza), Pharmacotherapy (Ilaj-bil-Dawa), and Surgery (Ilaj-bil-Yad ).

Regimental therapy mainly focuses on Detoxification by various methods such as Venesection, cupping, sweating, Diuresis, Turkish Bath, Massage, Counter Irritation, Cauterization, Purging, Vomiting, Exercises, and Leeching methods.

Diet therapy is very important and Unani system insist on quality and quantity of the food.

Pharmacotherapy in Unani focuses on natural medicines herbal, and also uses animals and mineral origin too. Most of the medicines in Unani Preparation to consider potency, age, temperament of the patient, and nature and severity of the disease.

Unani drugs are usually in the form of powders, infusions, decoctions, syrup, tablets, Khamira, Murabba, Jwarish, Majoon etc.

Surgery is limited and minor surgeries are in practice such as for anorectal disorders, skin complaints etc.

There are many over-the counter medicines which are usable for general body weakness, or to enhance sexual health, similar to many herbal medicines, one can consume these medicines safely with proper dosage.
