What is Epilepsy?

Epilepsy refers to be a disturbed brain function. This arises due to different causes which varies from person to person. It is explained as a brain disorder in which abnormal signaling that occurs in clusters of nerve cells, or neurons, or whole in the brain.

There are different causes for seizures or fits. These vary from person to person. In seizures or epilepsy, the normal pattern of neuronal activity becomes disturbed, causing strange sensations, emotions, and behavior, or sometimes convulsions, muscle spasms, and loss of consciousness which may be temporary.

Epilepsy is not contagious and is not caused by mental illness or mental retardation, however some people with mental retardation may experience seizures, but seizures do not necessarily mean the person has or will develop mental impairment.

Causes for epilepsy

Anything that disturbs the normal pattern of neuron activity may act as cause for the illness and that may be due to any illness or brain damage, or even developmental changes in brain may lead to seizures and usually with abnormalities in brain wiring that occur during brain development also may disturb neuronal activity and lead to epilepsy.

Epilepsy even develops as a result of brain damage from other disorders like brain tumors, Alzheimer's disease, alcoholism, strokes, heart attacks, and other conditions that deprive the brain of oxygen like Kidney failure, Electrolyte imbalance, Phenylketoneuria, severe nutritional deficiency also can cause epilepsy in some cases.

Lack of sleep and skipping certain doses of medicines may also cause epilepsy.

Types of Epilepsy

  • Focal seizures: Focal seizures which are also called partial seizures, that occurs at one part of the brain and may happen in 60% of the Epilepsy people.
  • Generalized Seizures: Abnormal neuron activity that occurs in both sides of the brain that may cause falls, loss of consciousness, massive muscle spasms.

Difference between seizures and epilepsy

First seizures, febrile seizures, eclampsia are examples of seizures that may not be associated with epilepsy. Medical science believes one having a seizure does not by itself mean a person has epilepsy.

Complications of epilepsy

There may be convulsions and due to attack, there are ijuries resulting from a fall, biting the tongue and even accidents that occur while operating any machinery or driving. Side effects of medications may lead to complications.

Managing Epilepsy with Ayurveda

There are many treatments available in ayurveda that helps in treating the patient who is suffering from epilepsy. By considering patient’s lifestyle and food habits, Ayurvedic physicians will try to re-modify the diet and lifestyle wherein it involves avoiding salty and sour food items in excess with low-fat diet and there are some natural brain tonics such as Bramhmi, Sawarswatha etcetera which are also available in medicines form.

Along with diet and lifestyle ayurvedic doctors will suggest some treatments. There are two methods which ayurvedic doctors usually follow. By considering the frequency of attacks, during the attacks and after the attacks line of treatments will be different.

One should try to consume long term medications under strict medical supervision. If a patient is taking allopath medicines, that should not be stopped all of a sudden, meanwhile they can take ayurvedic medicines that has to be taken for longer duration even if attacks are not there or frequency of attacks are very less in order to make brain function normal and to improve proper nervous functioning, these therapies and medicines will help.

Panchakarma treatment for epilepsy is usually like Shirodhara or certain massage treatments.

Herbs for Epilepsy

Herbs that are used in epilepsy usually are Valerian (European traditional botanical), Piper nigrum, Passiflora incarnata, Kava kava, and Withania somnifera, Bacopa monnieri (jalbrahmi), Centella asiatics or mandookaparni, or brahmi, Evolvulus alsinoides (shankhapushpi), or Nardostachys jatamansi or jatamansi are generally used for epilepsy either in the form of single drug or in the combination as a form of medicines.

Ayurvedic medicines for Epilepsy

There are medicines which has to be consumed during epilepsy such as Kalayanaka Gritham, or Panchagavya Gritham, or Siddarthaka Gritham, Diva Medha Vati, Combination medications for Epilepsy are helpful in such condition.

Yoga and Pranayama for Epilepsy

If seizures are associated with stress, they may benefit from learning stress management and relaxation techniques. Ayurveda emphasizes such techniques they are progressive muscle relaxation and deep diaphragmatic breathing. Yoga and meditation are found to be very helpful in such condition and to improve their quality of life.

Precautions for Epilepsy

Though Ayurveda and other alternative therapies are very helpful in treating Epilepsy, depending up on the severity and type of epilepsy, there are variations in treatments, in order to take suitable or right medications, one should consult a doctor, Ayurvedic doctor in order to get right suggestions on diet and medications. If any individual who is taking regular anti epileptic medications should not stop without any concern of doctors and however, one can continue using Ayurvedic medications along with allopath medications by consulting qualified practitioner.
