What is Ayurveda

Ayurveda, The science of life is being identified very well around the world in recent times because of its preserved healing concepts which are being explored well now a days and the science of Ayurveda with ancient wisdom of knowledge is sprinkled from heaven down to earth with the blessings of divine powers towards positive spirits. Ayurveda with two words Ayu and Veda denotes the knowledge of life. The whole concept of ayurveda shows the way of living healthy life with natural remedies with healthy lifestyle and food.

What are Ayurvedic Medicines

The medicines which are prepared from natural herbs and purified essential minerals in different forms to treat diseases and these medicines are called as Ayurvedic medicines. These ayurvedic medicines are helpful as natural remedies which are effective in treating many diseases. As it is believed that these ayurvedic medicines also teach the way of leading healthy life, that is because when these Ayurvedic medicines are consumed in proper timings and dosages with proper restrictions, that itself will make an individual to lead a punctual life which is a right direction to live healthy physically and mental.

Types of Ayurvedic medicines

There are more than 600 medicines which are approved formulations being in use. As per government rules, these medicines are classified as classical medicines and proprietary medicines.

  • As the present trend in to avoid the risk of side effects and get the disease treated in natural ways. With this concept, ayurvedic medicines have gained a positive response in treating diseases with natural herbs and herbal preparations. The advantage of ayurvedic medicines are they don’t contain steroids. In allopath medicine contain antibiotics, or steroids and other chemical compounds which may cause side effects when used for long time.

Ayurveda medicinal system

Similar to Allopath system of medicines with various specialities like gastroenterology, cardiology, general medicines, geriatrics, gynaecology etc. Similarly, Ayurvedic medicines are classified into eight branches such as Kayachikitsa or Internal medicines, Shalakya Tantra or Ears Nose and Throat, Vishagara vairodh Tantra or Toxicology, Kaumara bhritya or paediatrics, Shalyatantra or Surgery, Bhuta Vidya or psychiatry, Vajikarana or aphrodisiacs, and Rasayana or Rejuvenation. Based on these classifications, there are different types of diseases mentioned and treatments are explained accordingly.

Internal medicines or Kayachikitsa include the general medicines for various ailments such as gastroenterology, fever, or other similar medicines and examples are some package medicines which come in this category such a Acidity and Hyperacidity Medicine, Acne and skin problems, Package Medicine for Anemia, Medicines for cough and cold, Ayurvedic Medicines for Fevers etc., comes under General Medicines.

Shalakya Tantra or Ears Nose and Throat include Medicines for EAR diseases, Medicines for Sinusitis etc.,

Vishagara vairodh Tantra or Toxicology deals with medicines regarding toxins and poisons.

Kaumara bhritya or paediatrics deals with the diseases of new born and up to 18years old.

Shalyatantra or Surgery which include minor surgeries, such as Kharasutra or medicated ligation for treating piles, blood-letting therapies are being recommended in ayurveda.

Bhuta Vidya or psychiatry deals with mental related disorders and even psychological disorders where treatments are given in ayurveda such as Shirodhara, etc. Medicines such as package medicines for stress and depression, Sumenta for the same depression condition.

Vajikarana or aphrodisiacs which deals with sexual related complaints such as erectile dysfunction, erectile dysfunction in males and sexual dysfunction in both genders and ayurvedic medicines are available. There are medicines for Sexual weakness for men and for women few medicines are indicated.

Rasayana or Rejuvenation: There are many ayurvedic medicines which are helpful for rejuvenation purpose, for example, medicines for general debility and weakness, Ashwagandha Churna, Triphala Churna, are useful medicines and are best rejuvenators.

Ayurvedic medicines administration and safety/precautions

  • As these ayurvedic medicines are authentic medicinal preparations and they are very safe when consumed in prescribed manner and depending on the age, medicine dosage may vary like in children the dosages would be minimum and one should take precaution while following dosages and appropriate timing should be followed.
  • Avoid non-vegetarian food while consuming these ayurvedic medicines.
  • For chronic diseases, and for some illnesses, one may need to consume the medicines for longer duration may be for 6 months are more.
