Answered by Dr.Ramani : Keratoconus is a progressive condition that affects the cornea. As the cornea thins, it causes blurred vision and gives a cone shape to the cornea. It is commonly seen as a heredity disorder which may have been absent in your family due to the role of multiple genes responsible for causing it. There is not a hundred percent genetic predisposition in most of the genetic conditions. Ayurvedic medicines like Divya MahaTriphala Ghrit and Saptamrit Lauh can be used for 3months and review. Ayurvedic treatment known as netra tarpanam will be beneficial. Include ghee, carrots, broccoli, avocados, flax seeds, olive oil, gooseberry, pumpkin and sweet potatoes. Reduce excess canned foods, fried foods, sugar, salt and carbonated beverages. Do protect the eyes from excess sunlight or dust. Please do have regular checkups with your treating physician.

Question: Dear Sir, My daughter is 4 years old and she has -2.0 and -1.25 cylindrical power in eye, pls help me know the aryuvedic treatment for the same.

Answered by Dr.Vijay : Hello, This condition, otherwise known as astigmatism, is genetically determined and is present from birth. Because of some difference in the shape of cornea, light enters differently to retina and thus end up in blurred vision. This power is usually stable and she needs to use spetacles regularly for a better quality of vision. Depending upon her eyes, how she take care of it and genetic heritage, it may get worse later or it may even get better. You can however help your daughter to improve her vision by giving proper nutrients and vitamins along with eye exercises. Give her food rich in vitamin B,C, calcium, magnesium and zinc like carrots spinach, bilberry, eggs, wheat germ, garlic, seafood, asparagus, beans, watermelon, grapes etc in appropriate quantity. Do not strain her eyes by making her watch TV for long hours. . Ayurvedic medicines like Amalaki Rasayana for internal usage Saptamrit Lauh which are helpful in your condition. However those medicines are given in smaller doses and if necessary, it is better to consult an Ayurvedic doctor For that i advise you to take her to an eye specialist in ayurveda (MD in SHALAKYA TANTRA).
Question: Hello Sir/Madam, Iam 31 yrs old married woman. My eyesight no is -2.5 for both the eyes. Iam wearing specs since 7 yrs.i dont have any other problem. I want to see clearly without specs.i dont get free time to do any exercise. Plz tell me if there is any ayurvedic medicine by which i can see without specs. I feel very uncomfortable wearing it. I'll be very much grateful to u. Waiting for ur reply...

Answered by Dr.Ramani : Glasses are used to correct and help the eyes focus easier while viewing the distant objects. The difficulty in focussing the light rays by the cornea causes headache when there is strain. It is not curable but that which is less than -3D is mild myopia which can be controlled without progression with proper diet and eyeexercise. It is convenient to do eye exercise as you sit like viewing close and far objects for about 10times and gradually increase it. Other exercises like closing, opening, moving the eyeballs can be practised whenever you get time. Medicines like Saptamrit Lauh and Divya MahaTriphala Ghrit can be taken for 3months and then reviewed. Eye healthy foods are good for the eyes and are healthy also. Include gooseberry, pumpkin, spinach, broccoli, sweet potatoes, red bell peppers, cabbage, carrots and orange. Try to give proper rest to the eyes by regular sleep. Please do have regular eye checkups.

He is 34yrs body weight 70kg.normal built.no history of surgery except optic nerve decompression.no blood pressure. Not diabetes.no family history disease

Answered by Dr.Ramani : Optic nerve compression occurs due to injury of the optic nerve. It is vulnerable to injury as it extends beyond the hard protecting skull to the softer areas in face. Injury to it produces problems with vision as you have mentioned. After an injury the regeneration of axons in the optic nerve will be affected. So Ayurvedic medicines can be given to strengthen the nerves and vision. Medicines like Saptamrit Lauh and Divya MahaTriphala Ghrit can be taken. Eat healthy food with more vegetables and fruits. Include carrots, spinach, broccoli, bell peppers, brussel sprouts and sweet potatoes. Do not strain the eyes, close your eyes with palms of your hand once in 20-40min when using computers or watching television. Sleep well for a good rest. Do some eye exercises like rolling the eye ball up and down, moving it clockwise and anticlockwise, looking near and then far will improve the circulation. Wear sun glasses and protect it from dust. Dr.Ramani.

Question: Hello, My mother is completely blind now. She is 50 years old. She lost her vision about 10 years ago when doctor removed her brain tumour. As per doctors, there is no blood circulation in her optic nerve or may be damaged. That's why she can't see. There is no treatment for this in medical science. I was wondering is there any treatment to restore her vision. I will be waiting for your reply. Thanks, Zohra

Answered by Dr.Ramani : Sometimes vision loss happens due to growth of the tumour or due to the injury to the optic nerve during the surgery. Generally the vision has to improve after a few weeks if the function of the optic nerve was restored. But after that especially in your mother's case after such a long time, and also there will be no regeneration of the axons in the optic nerve. Does she have any other symptoms in the eye bothering her? But medicines like Saptamrit Lauh and Divya MahaTriphala Ghrit can be taken to improve the general health and to strengthen the muscles of the eye. Your mother can take it for 3months and then reviewed. I appreciate your concern for your mother and please try with these medicines which is good for the eyes and also will improve her general health.
