Answered by Dr.Ramani : Osteoarthritis in knee happens commonly due to overweight, heredity influence, injuries and it varies in each person with the age of onset. The degeneration of the cartilage leads to the diminished joint space. Kapha dosha is responsible for the stability and lubrication of the joints. So with the degenerative changes, there is a decrease of Kapha and increase of Vata that is responsible for the pain. It repsonds very well with the Ayurvedic medicines. Panchakarma treatments like Abyanga, Pizhichal, Rice poultice helps to strengthen the knee joint and reduce the pain. Medicines like MahaRasnadi Kadha, Yograj Guggulu can be taken for a month. Divya Pidantak Tailam can be applied externally. Eat healthy food. Give good rest to the knees. As the pain decreases, start to exercise slowly to increase the circulation in the knee joint. Please let me know if you have swelling as you have to avoid applying oil if there is swelling.

Answered by Dr.Ramani : ACL ligament injury in the knee is a very common problem. Could you please mention your symptoms? Do you have any associated injuries in knee along with the ligament? Usually it leads to swelling, pain, instability. Grade 1 and 2 responds better to treatments started earlier. But still you can try with Maharasnadi kadha, Mahayograj guggulu, Dhanvantaram thailam(101)- 10drops with ginger water at bedtime, Divya Pidantaka thailam - warm the oil and do some massage. Slowly do some exercises of the knee by flexing, extending and bending without straining the knee. This may help to decrease the pain, improve stability and range of motion. Practise gentle Yogasanas without straining the knee. Eat healthy food. Avoid fried fatty foods. Do not strain your knee. Dr.Ramani.
Question: Respected sir, i am 28 year old and from last 3-4 months there is locking in my left knee ,i am consult with joint specilist and he advice me for MRI of the left knee then i undergo the MRI of left knee , in the MRI report there should be an low grade partial tear of ACL and mild synovial effusion is detected ,doctor give me hinge knee brease and physiotherpist told me knee stretching excersices by using rope ,sir please suggest me an ayurvedic medicines and treatments for heal ACL tear.

Answered by Dr.Ramani : Anterior cruciate ligament injury is very common which occurs in the knee joint. It is the ligament which is diagonally present in the middle. Swelling, pain, tenderness, loss of range of motion are the usual symptoms. Usually it takes 3months for a recovery. But partial tear compared with grade 3 tear responds better to treatments. You can take Maharasnadi kadha, MahaYograj Guggulu, Ksheera bala thailam - 10drops with ginger water after food at bed time. Dhanvantaram tailam for external application. Apply Kottanchukkadi churnam by making a paste with warm water if you have swelling. Eat healthy food. Drink enough water. Follow the exercises advised to you. Please let me know after 3weeks. Question: Dear sir, I am veer bhadra . I use to run 5KMS daily beacuse of that I use to feel some pain..I was regular with my routein and I got ACL tear. Now my MRI reports says it reveled mild synovial effusion with edema involving intramuscular plane in the posterior &lateral aspect of knee joint and partial tear of the anterior cruciate ligament with maintained continuity...afTer this report also doctor didn't instruct me not to bend my knee.I use to walk everyday and was using indian toilet. Swelling started increasing so I changed the doctor then this doctor said not to bend my knee at all. So till then it is almost 75 days I am using the braces all the time not bending my knee also taking allopathy medicines.but still there is swelling and pain .at the same time I was taking ayurvedic medicines like yograj gugglu, R compound, maharasnadi kadha it is almost 80 days sir. Now doctor is asking to operate it. Please sir I don't wanna go for operation. Please suggest me good ayurvedic medicines and some lepaa or something to apply on it and get recover fast. Answered by Dr.Ramani : The response of treatments or medicines for ligament injury depends on the intensity of the injury and the involvement of the nearby structures. Partial injury usually heals within 3months. Please discuss with your doctor before starting with exercise and it has to be started slowly and gradually. As you have taken the medicines for 80days, you can stop them now. You can take Varunadi Kvath - 15ml with 60ml of warm water before food twice daily and Divya Kanchanar Guggulu for two weeks and then reviewed. A warm paste with a tablespoon of kottanchukkadi churnam by boiling in tamarind water an be made and applied in the swelling. It will help to reduce the swelling and the pain. Divya Pidantak Tailam can be applied externally for the pain. Include garlic, turmeric, pepper, ginger, barley, coriander, kokilaksha and gokshuram. Reduce excess cold foods, oil, sugar, salt, canned foods and refined flour. Please do have regular checkups with your orthopaedician to assess the progress. Surgery must be considered if the pain or instability continues after the review with your doctor.
Question: Sir, I had an ankle arthroscopy on my right ankle for a 0.5mm osteochondral lesion on talar dome. After 4 months I had severe pain in the same spot , the latest scan has revealed that there is still an osteochondral lesion on 0.6mm. The allopathy Doctor says that it will take 12-18 months for any recovery and there is no need worry. Please advice

Answered by Dr.Ramani : Osteochondrama in the ankle is sen after an injury. The damage in the cartilage causes ostechondromal changes. Gentle massage along with the medicines will help to reduce the pain and will improve the mobility of the joint. Ayurvedic medicines like MahaRasnadi Kadha and Yograj Guggulu can be taken for a month and reviewed. Divya Pidantak Tailam can be applied externally. Include nuts, ginger, cissus quadrangularis, flax seeds, avocados, olive oil and sesame seeds. Reduce excess oil, canned foods, refined flour, sugar and salt. Give rest when there is pain and gentle exercise can be started after the pain has subsided.
Question: I have moderate knee pain from past 7 months mainly while squatting , and sitting cross legged Have consulted ortho doctors , xray done . Answered by Dr.Ramani : Osteoarthritis is a common problem in which the cartilage around the bony ends will be damaged. It is seen as the age progresses and if there is excessive body weight stressing the knee joint. Ayurvedic medicines and treatments are very effective to manage the pain. Massage increases the circulation of the synovial fluid thereby nourishing the joints. MahaRasnadi Kadha and Rheumartho for Joints pain can be taken for a month and then reviewed. Arth oil for joints pain relief can be used for massage. Ayurvedic treatments like leaf poultice, janu vasti, streaming oil, oil massage and rice poultice will be beneficial. Include cissus quadrangularis, nuts, olive oil, turmeric, cumin, coriander and ginger. Reduce excess cold foods, oil, meat, sugar and salt. It is advisable to maintain a healthy weight.

Answered by Dr.Ramani : Fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome usually causes body pain, headache, loss of concentration and fatigue. It may be mild or severe with deep muscular pain varying in each person. Ayurvedic medicines can be taken to improve the function of the mind as well as to reduce the physical symptoms like pain in the body. Ayurvedic medicines like MahaRasnadi Kadha, Brahmi capsules and Agastya Rasayanam - 1tsp before food twice daily can be taken for a month and then reviewed. Panchakarma treatments like Ayurvedic Oil massages, Pizhichal, Poultices, Shirodhara and Shiro vasti will be beneficial. Include whole grains, olives, avocados, green tea, garlic, spinach, pomegranate, dark chocolate and cinnamon. Pranayamam, Meditation, Yogasanas like Sarvangasana, Sirsasana, Halasana, Trikonasana, Siddhasana, Padmasana ans Shavasana will help to improve the function of the brain which is beneficial.
Question: I am suffering from occasional pain in ribs region, how can I get rid of that, my doctor said that it maybe costochondritis. Is there any remedy in ayurveda?

Answered by Dr.Ramani : Yes, there are very effective medicines to relieve the pain in Ayurveda. Costochondritis is inflammation of the ribs that join with the cartlilage that joins them to the sternum. There will be pain and tenderness and sometimes it may be with swelling. It usually happens after injury or respiratory infection. If it is not associated with other conditions like rheumatoid arthritis or ankylosing spondylitis it is easy to treat. You can take MahaRasnadi Kadha, Yograj Guggulu, Divya Pidantak Tailam. Eat healthy food with more vegetables and fruits. Include some healthy fats like nuts, flax seeds, avocados, olive oil. Drink enough water. Practise Pranayamam- Anuloma Viloma, Yogasanas like Vajrasana, Padmasana, Savasana initially and then after a week try to do Dhanurasana, Bhujangasana, Trikonasana. Watch carefully and and start doing them slowly. If you feel more pain stop doing and try to do it when you are able to manage with the pain. Dr.Ramani.

Answered by Dr.Ramani : Gout is an inflammatory arthritis with swelling and pain with increased uric acid and osteoarthritis is due to the degenerative changes in the joints. The cartilage will be affected and hence medicines to reduce the pain and inflammation must be taken initially. Please let me know the level of uric acid to guide you further. Ayurvedic medicines like MahaRasnadi Kadha, Brihad Vata Chintamani and Dhanvantaram thailam(101) - 10drops with ginger water at bedtime can be taken for a month and then reviewed. Divya Pidantak Tailam can be applied externally after the swelling has reduced. Include olive oil, sesame seeds, turmeric, coriander, garlic, ginger and cumin. Reduce excess peas, mushroom, spinach, cauliflower, meat, sugar, canned foods, sweet, fish, salt, oil, cold refrigerated foods and carbonated beverages. Regular exercise after the pain has reduced will be beneficial.

Answered by Dr.Ramani : Gout is mentioned as Vata rakta in Ayurveda. It is due to the vitiated vata and rakta. So medicines that normalise the vitiated vata and rakta will reduce the symptoms of Vata rakta like pain and swelling. Medicines like Maharasnadi kadha, Kaisora guggulu, chopchinyadi churnam and Mahanarayana thailam from Baidyanath are effective. Along with that eat healthy foods with less protein. Avoid red meat, organ meat, butter, oil, refined flour, sugar, alcohol, caffeine, dairy products, coffee, tea, colas. Reduce Sodium and control foods rich in potassium, phosphorus and purine rich foods like peas, nuts, beans, mushrooms, asparagus, chicken, fish, yeast and avocados. Reduce salt. Drink enough water. Do mild and gentle exercise.
